Course Description

Provides an overview of our major federal, state and local public benefit programs. The class examines public assistance programs like TANF (Temporary Aid to Needy Families) and SSI (Supplemental Security Income); disability programs like SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) and health insurance programs like Medi-Cal, Medicare and the new Affordable Care Act. Students gain a working knowledge of eligibility requirements, program rules and recipient responsibilities including the goal of self-sufficiency.
